Apple, Spotify, YouTube, and Amazon: How Do These Music-Streaming Apps Compare?

Photo by Heidi Sandstrom.  on Unsplash

The world of CDs, cassette tapes, and records are almost long gone and replaced with streaming. These streaming services allows us to listen to music wherever we are and instead of being limited to one song or one album, paying a small monthly fee or sometimes nothing at all to hear millions of songs anytime, anywhere!

The leading music-streaming apps are Apple music, Spotify, YouTube, and Amazon Music-I'm sure you have at least one downloaded on your phone now. They each provide practically the same service where you can listen to pretty much the same music from each, however they do have slight differences based on the features of price,  content, and the apps themselves.

The Wall Street Journal discusses these four music-streaming apps and how they compare across five characteristics of price, content, curation, apps, and ecosystem. However, in this blog we will only focus on three, listed above.

Price

When it comes to price, this is the breakdown:

Amazon Prime Music: free for prime members/$12.99 for non-prime members

Amazon Music Unlimited: $7.99/mo for prime members & $9.99/mo for non-prime members

Apple Music: $9.99/mo or $14.99/mo for a family plan of up to six members

Spotify: free

Sporify Premium: $9.99/mo or $14.99/mo for up to six family members

YouTube Music Premium: $9.99/mo

Content

They all offer similar content, where you will find most of the same songs, artists, albums across all platforms. However some offer unique features that may not be found on the others. For example, Apple music offers exclusive interviews with artists and YouTube Music Premium offers users the service of watching music videos in addition to listening to the song.

To read a more detailed description of each service including its pros, cons, and what audience or group of people can best benefit from each Music streaming apps, check out Nicholas Deleon's article, Best Music Streaming Services.

Apps

In terms of how well each app was created and the features it provides there are some great differences. Spotify is one of the slower apps to load, according to the Wall Street Journal, as well as difficult to use. YouTube Music lacks the basic ability of sorting your library in alphabetical order and Apple has not done a great job of making the visibility friendly across all devices.

My favorite app to use, however is Spotify, since i have been a member for the last four years and the app has adapted to my past music history.

Displayed below is a video of the top 5 best music streaming services in 2018. Here you will find a few services mentioned in this blog and a couple that were not, nevertheless this video highlights the pros and cons of each service and what aspect each excels in. Click now to find out more!

Pursuing a Career as a Music Teacher

Teacher-assisting-a-girl.jpg

A career as a music teacher or instructor is a very unique profession to hold, considering the lasting effects you will have on those you teach and the daily activities a music teacher is involved in. This can range from teaching students how to read music, how to play an instrument, or vocal performance. For this reason, many music teachers specialize in specific areas of music where they have the experience- such as teaching how to play piano or sing opera. One can teach music within schools or be a private music teacher working from a studio or home. Public music teachers also usually have a lesson plan they follow, whereas the latter will have to adjust their lesson plans according to each child and their needs.

What are the Steps to Become a Music Teacher/Instructor?

If you decide to become a public music teacher, having a bachelor's degree in music and completing a state-approved teacher preparation program is required. According to Teacher Certification Degrees the full process to becoming a music teacher generally includes:

  1. Earning a bachelor's degree in music or music education (including a teacher preparation program)
  2. Completing a music internship at the grade level you wish to teach
  3. Taking your state-certified test for teachers
  4. Applying for a teaching certificate
  5. Applying for music teacher positions wherever you can after college

On the other hand, becoming a private music instructor is less strenuous- there are no official requirements unless you are planning to work for a private company. Even then, the requirements will vary per company. Since having a degree in music is not necessarily needed, almost anyone can become a private music instructor. However, whether a person is qualified or not is an important point. While there is more flexibility when it comes to being a private music teacher, there are usually some minimum requirements that must be met in order to become a successful private instructor in your area. To see some of these requirements, check out these two blogs by Brian Jenkins and CareersinMusic.com.

The Benefits of Music Education

There are many benefits in pursuing music education other than just honing your talent. One example that you may not think of is when practicing at a young age, to learn music one must refine their muscles, their ears, and their eyes. This can enhance or shed light on other skills that practicing child may have. In 2004, Glenn Schellenberg from the University of Toronto conducted a study where six-year-olds IQ's were tested before and after the school year. Those who engaged in weekly voice and piano lessons had an average of 3 points higher in IQ after their training. If one is really interested in music, it will come as no shocker that a huge benefit of practicing music can affect your mental state positively.
